There has been a great deal of media attention lately on Roundup®, the widely used weed killer manufactured by Monsanto that has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Anyone with a lawn has probably used or considered using Roundup. It has been sold widely in America since the 1970s.  And it is not only used by consumers tending their lawns, but by farmers and agricultural concerns for a wide variety of crops. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 100 million pounds of glyphosate is applied to lawns and crops in the United States every year.

The Northland Injury Law Team is investigating cases involving Roundup Weed Killer and the diagnosis of NHL. The lawsuits allege Monsanto, the agricultural company producing Roundup, knew about the risk for cancer yet failed to warn consumers. Unfortunately, this is something we see all too often in product liability cases.

What is a Glyphosate?

Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, has been linked to many serious health issues. A July 2015 report published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified the chemical compound as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

The report states:
“Two large case-control studies of NHL from Canada and the USA, and two case-control studies from Sweden reported statistically significant increased risks of NHL [Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma] in association with exposure to glyphosate.”

The use of agricultural grade Roundup has increased since the introduction of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops in the 1990’s. In 2012 alone, over 283 million pounds of glyphosate were sprayed on crops across the U.S., including corn, soybeans, and sugar beets, among others.

Linking Roundup to Cancer

There are several recent studies that show glyphosphate’s potential to be an endocrine disruptor, which are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system in mammals. These disruptors can cause tumors, namely non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).

NHL is cancer that damages the lymphatic system. The disease normally starts in the lymph nodes and lymphatic tissues. But it can also get into the blood and bone marrow. NHL is not only one disease, it is several blood cancers that share some characteristics for how they grow.

According to an April 2014 review that was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, glyphosate exposure could be a top reason for the large increase of patients that have been diagnosed with this serious cancer over the last 30 years. For this review, researchers looked at 45 studies to determine how 80 active ingredients in 20 different chemical classes affected the risk of farmers to contract the disease. It was determined that being exposed to glyposphate doubled the risk of developing NHL.

Qualifying Diseases include non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and its certain subtypes:

    • hairy cell leukemia (HCL)
    • mantle cell lymphoma
    • marginal zone B-cell lymphomas

You should be looked at immediately by a doctor if you suspect you have cancer caused by Roundup exposure.
